Chinese tradition despises the girl child. A girl is a disappointment.
Also, couples are limited to have 1 child, at most two children. Which was initially instituted to keep the population down.
Now there is a huge gender gap in China of about 24 million boys; that will never be able to marry because there aren't enough women.
