Not been there only been a couple of places outside Bangkok and Pattaya but in my limited experience the further you get away the greater the experience.
Never been down south but thats coming within the next year, if everything goes right I plan on renewing my lease for another year and then go south, north and everything in between as long as I avoid, BKK, Pattaya, Phuket and all the other places swamped by tourists.
Funny thing is when I stay in Thailand I save money despite the rent and utilities there since the cost of everyday living is 1/5th or less there for example:
11/2 L of coke in Denmark $4
11/2 L of Coke in Thailand $.80
