It's also amazing how many people think that one style of design fits all. If you're pushing membership to an image / video based subscription, it should be represented in the ad. ("The Ad" = the outer site). For a "rock club", radio station, band, etc. this also applies. (of course, there are many ways to accomplish that, but that's another topic).
A minimalistic graphics approach works for Amazon & Google, because they aren't selling images / video as the entire reason for their existence, nor are they selling an overall "image", (feel), like a rock club would be.
Different product, different approach, different design.
An Apple Store probably wouldn't go over if it was designed to look like a log cabin.
