If the movie avoided 100% of the tropes of science fiction, then it might not have been much of a science fiction movie.
With $300 mill at stake, a creator usually will try to mitigate risk wherever possible. This is the reason inexpensive indies can have edgier material, but may be more limited in locations, effects, and talent available. Kinda movie-making 101 there.
You know James Cameron wrote and directed Aliens, right? I got the sense that Avatar might even take place in the same SF universe as Aliens.
