After Jimmy Fallon skipped past Carson Daily in the Late Night follow-up slot to the Tonight Show, Carson changed formats, and quit trying to do the same old late night talk show schtick, and his show improved tremendously (imho).
I feel on the other hand that since Conan took over the Tonight Show he has lost a lot of his edge. Gone are many of the quirky bits that made his show great, such as Joel Goddard, Preparation H Raymond, the FedEx Pope, the Funhole Guy, the Interrupter, the Coked-Up Werewolf, the Masturbating Bear, Pimpbot 5000...hell, even Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, has done only one appearance since Conan moved into his earlier time slot.
The Max Weinberg 7 has toned down their style of music. They were once the best late night band - now I have to give that title to The Roots on Jimmy Fallon's show.
I would like to see Conan and Carson bail to some other station (network or cable), and hopefully Conan will ffel free from having to appeal to Tonight Show demographics, and will return to a more creative original style.
I don't know if Comedy Central has the budget, but it would be cool to see Conan over there. I'm not sure if Fox would be a good fit, unless they gave him free reign, but hey, they are the station of the Simpsons, and are not the same right wing propaganda machine as their Faux News sister network, so why not throw the dice...
As for Jay, he made his big play for primetime and flopped in very short order, displacing some good shows and putting lots of people out of work in the process or caused them to jump networks (Southland moved over to TNT, etc). So I say fuck him for trying to get back the job that Conan waited patiently for years to get.
Jay back at 11:35 for thirty minutes will suck only slightly less than if he gets back his one hour slot at that time, and if he makes no changes to a show that went stale along time ago (if the implausible Jaywalking All-Stars bit is the best he can do), then stick a fork in him, because he is done.
