I can talk about one case of a model I worked with a while ago who went to a large city to go to a university and did some modeling to help support herself. So, what is the motivation? Money. You wonder why an attractive 18-21 girl wouldn't just marry a rich guy. In thi sparticular case, she was trolling for a rich guy and even fell from time to time, but of course what has taken her a while to realize is that while these men (many of whom already have girlfriends and/or wives) may think she's pretty and witty and good company, they are not going to marry a prostitute.
