To his credit, the SEO traffic as a source of sales makes sense especially since he does have some longer tail keywords on there for specific searches, and it's been online for a few months. The site has good SEO potential.
I can see how someone who knows next to nothing about SEO can be getting traffic and a trickle of sales and not know where it came from. So explanation solved, even though I think someone who's been around as long as SD should know more about SEO!
