scott, i think your idea is fine and although your site needs a lot of work, become a stats whore and try everything.. this is almost 2010 and if you aren't split testing then you are an IDIOT...
you took the first step by taking action and that is more than most people ever do, now just dont let ego get in the way of taking peoples advice, even if its the wrong advice...

thank you - that's really good advise.
I believe in listening to everything... i'm not going to take all advise (as there may be different reasons for that that might not seem ovbious) but i'll listen and consider as much as possible....
