Kansas bible thumpers are certainly not usually evangelical or radical but they have done far more damage than the deranged evangelicals we have in North Carolina.
Religious fanaticism is dangerous because these people believe 100% of what the bible tells them. There is zero common sense involved. If you believe and live your life by what the bible tells you, I feel that you have a mental affliction. People who recognize the bible as a nice collection of fictional writing (like Mother Goose) aren't dangerous.

Your issue then should be with lack of education, not religion.
Rarely will you find fanatics that are educated unless they are taking advantage of others.
