It is the 2nd largest cash holiday in the US right behind Christmas, well not right behind dollar for dollar wise but way up there.
Although it did used to be a kids holiday and I did used to bitch that adults had hijacked it to act like pimps, sluts, and wear shit in bad taste - yet another holiday to go out and party from the "it is all about me, and the sun also revolves around me" generation. I am no longer bitching.
Most of the Halloween myths are dieing off. Thank gawd that some are getting over stranger danger, and shows such as myth busters and other TV programs have been better explaining that nobody gets poison, nobody finds needles or razor blades in their candy, hospitals using X-ray machines on candy is fucking stupid, etc. Nobody but your fucking Ex is going to kidnap your kid and odds are it will be your cousin and not some stranger who will diddle your child.
Kids are sort of recapturing going out trick or treating and just doing safe malls and crap are slowing down. However the one major saving grace that can save the holiday for kids and adults alike is our generations fucking vanity.
Thanks to super stores like Spirit Halloween that are pop up for the holiday disappear a week after stores who specialize in Halloween, and that people fucking love haunted houses and mazes.
What we are seeing is a HUGE fucking trend in house decorations for Halloween flying off the shelves. What used to be paying a couple bucks for some pumpkins has gone to people spending hundreds to thousands each year to decorate their houses. Most of these decorations are interactive and visual. This means in order to show off, you need visitors. Add that with how our generation needs to do more and be more than everyone else (McMansions, High end cars, Name brand everything, etc) and a holiday that already has people visiting and going door to door very well can salvage the holiday and once again get the kids on the streets.
Perhaps not walking, but being driven around - it still is a step in the right direction.
