On the other hand, attenuated viruses can cause the disease:

Killed/inactive viral particles cannot cause the disease, but attenuated viral particles can - although it's quite rare, and the disease is typically less severe when it does happen.
Now, in the case of the flu vaccine, both variants are used. Killed virus for the shot, attenuated virus for the nasal spray:
p 5: "Currently available live attenuated viral vaccines include measles,
mumps, rubella, vaccinia, varicella, yellow fever, and influenza
(intranasal)."
p6: "Currently available inactivated vaccines are limited to inactivated
whole viral vaccines (influenza, polio, rabies, and hepatitis A)."
The woman in this story got the shot, which doesn't contain the live virus.
