Here is my findings.
Through the years Canuck has been a term that has been synono, ous with our neighbors from the north. The actual meaning of the words can be traced back inot he 1800's although no real definition has ever been determined, the term Canuck has often been looked upon as being a derogatory slang remark. Oddly in America Canuck has been used to label those from Canada. it is believed however that one of the first uses of the word nay have come from French Canadians labeling the Irish imagrants.
In the 1860's a figure was used in political satire "Johnny Canuck" the character was to represent a wholesome figure often depicted as a logger, a ranger, etc. This could be compared to the character used to represent the U.S. uncle Sam. The most common use of the word today is from the Professional Hockey team the Vancouver Canucks. The Whale in the Capital "C" of the logo has nothing to do with the word. The Whale is sybbolic of the Corporation that owns the team The Orca Bay Entertainment group and adopted the Killer Whale as a result of the name.
During the anto nazism a comic book character Johnny Canuck and Captain Canuck were used as anti nazi propaganda tools.
