it may also be they have limits on their credit card so they dont get nailed.
when i was testing out a few sites before, i set the limit on my virtual card to exactly what the charge will be + $1 for the authorization and i was surprised to see how many other transactions tried to come in.. but this was back 2 years ago when x-sales were king $$
probably a lot of people are living on almost maxed our credit cards so its not a surprise. if they are using a debit card, sometimes the bank will front them the credit if it overdraws their account so they can rape you for overdraft fees
