The forefathers also made the constitution amendable so that it could change with the times and be improved as needed. Defend yourself, sure, but modern firearms are different from the ones back in the day that was written. So was society. Today they create more problems then they solve or at least create enough problems that a blanket ban on citizenry owned guns would be a better thing than every citizen owning a gun.
