The larger issue (apart from the extortion attempt), is that Letterman was the employer/boss of the women. They could in all likelihood sue him and CBS. Therefore, CBS may choose to mitigate their potential liability by pre-emptively ousting Dave on the grounds of sexual harassment.

Dave makes around $35 million a year, which means he makes CBS significantly more. No idea what kind of damage a lawsuit like that could do financially, but I am willing to wager that CBS would be willing to put up with quite a bit of flak and still keep him around.
