heres an analogy
think of a 56k modem as a pipeline of only .5 inches in diameter.
think of a cable modem as a pipeline of about 3 feet in diameter (i dont know if those proportions are correct)
if you try to shoot water from the .5 pipeline for 5 mins at a "maximum" pressure
and then shoot water at the same pressure from the 3 foot diameter pipeline, you'll find you'll get a LOT more water transfered.. . (that was kind of a shitty analogy, LOL o well)
but thats how it works with internet connections.
standard 56k will only give you about tops 7kbps download / upload speed.
and your lag time is determined by the connection speed of you, to any particular host. say if you have a 30 ping in an online game, thats quite fast... 30 ping means 30 milliseconds of delay from you, to the server.
so if you were to play on a 56k (the smaller pipeline, less transfer speed), you'll usually get no less than a 170 ping.
