Get the newest version of Kapersky & a virtual pc sandbox type of software as well to go along with Kaperskey. (If you download any software at all).
Also keep your browser up to date....I would suggest blocking Internet explorer from your firewall as well, since almost all exploits load through it.
Right now Chrome is the only browser without super-active exploits (so i hear).
Also you'll need a decent firewall....and kapersky will bitch about it being installed. Hopefully they fix that one of these days. When i say decent firewall I'm talking comodo/outpost...or something else you can train to alert you when system files update/new dll's/ocx's are loaded.
If you wanna get real sophisticated get a hex editor & learn a little about what malicious software looks like. I also know a kid that has banned all new ASM language files from being run on his pc. He also has a linux box that acts as his firewall & then a VPN at a host to route it all out. I think he might be a bit over paranoid.
So to sum up.....Kapersky or Avira minimum. Firewall (not just windows firewall). Virtual PC sandbox type software. (for testing all new downloads in a safe enviroment) & use a not-so-well known browser & keep it constantly updated. Also block Internet Explorer from accessing the internet. (may affect some programs connection/proxy settings unfortunately).
You should also consider installing some proxy software at your host & routing all your web surfing through it. This will keep you from exposing your direct home-ip to everyone in the world 24-7. Of course you can route all your other protocols too....but just http/https is usually enough to cut way down on your daily digital fingerprint.
