The only realistic situation to have that car is if you had the ability to afford a 2-3 years old version.
I've seen 01s for around 12 about 6 months ago, they might be cheaper now.

Honestly it all depends what you're looking for.

If you want fun and cheap to maintain - Get a Camaro SS or Mustang Cobra. You can find both for under 10k now for "newer" ones (00-02) and having owned both Mustangs and Camaros they are cheap to maintain. My Camaros have all gotten better than 20mpg except the current one within the last 600 miles, only due to a huge converter and huge cam.

If you want cheap to maintain, go with a honda civic. My ex girlfriend in high school picked up an 01 with rims, suspension and a QUIET aftermarket exhaust with a 5spd for something like 7900 with 30k miles on it. Was a 2 door coupe, super clean and honestly not too bad to drive.

If you want "luxury" you can't go wrong with a 00-01 ES300 from Lexus.

I would not get a Merc/BMW if you're doing upkeep on a budget. I did an oil change on a Merc E series to the tune of almost $100 whereas my oil changes are ~45 for full synthetic on a motor that is more expensive than most people's cars.
