i agree, they aren't worth it for 95% of the people. Both the bigger companies feel they "have to still go" because if they don't its bad perception for their company. People may think they are hurting, not doing good, can't afford it etc...
If there was 1 big show, or at worst 2 big shows a year, a superbowl of shows with 5x more companies and attendees than there are now... the value would be worth paying for the travel costs. You would have a much much better chance to make deals and get business done that will more than pay for your cost to get there.
But as along as AVN's and Xbiz's are looking at the conventions as a revenue source in their portfolio, what I mentioned above will never happen. And over the next couple years all of these shows will implude because attendees and companies will be drained and most will stop going to all of the shows.
