I think it depends on who grows it, what it is and what region of the world it's in. In some areas, you just don't need to use any.

If you ever use pesticides make sure you avoid Monsanto.
Their products are not designed to be less toxic as it is implied, their products are designed to kill any seed not genetically modified by Monsanto. Ask the Indian farmer who were given free seeds and pesticides, now left with fields infertile to anything none Monsanto.
They were also working on an even better technology called "The Terminator" which ensured crops produced sterile seeds. Farmers could not continue holding over the seeds produced in one growing season for use in the next. They had to backtrack on that one.
