Offline social networks (ie, friends, co-workers, etc) are the #1 way people meet their partners. The benefit of that is that when you meet someone in that way, you're likely to be culturally similar. You'll probably have compatible beliefs, somewhat similar lifestyles, the same kind of friends, etc.
With online dating, on the other hand, people tend to meet the kind of people they think they want. More often than not, they turn out to be wrong.
