The derail occured coming out of a sharp curve, not entirely uncommon. First thing I noticed is how filthy the track is. They haven't ran a regulator through there is fucking ages. Not exactly the sort of thing that causes a derail, but it is a sure sign that they aren't exactly up to par with their track maintenance. I notice that coming out of the turn there is a pretty good dip in the tracks. A good sign that this hasn't been lifted and lined in ages either. No lift and line could suggest a drop in the elevation for the highside ride. A turn that sharp would require a pretty good difference in elevations between highside and lowside. Whatever caused the derail, it happened coming out of the curve.

Dips on tangent track and poor curves aren't entirely uncommon themselves, but judging by that boomtruck's track speed, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that they fire trains down that track at speeds which are far from safe on that track. From what I see that should be a 30mile/hour top speed line at most. Definitely not mainline speed, but there's eastern Europe for ya.

The track unit you saw barreling down the track was a boom truck, most likely called out for cleanup. It's nothing more than a big truck rigged for track use. That guy was definitely flying way to fast, and if European rail procedures operate anything even close to North American he should have been radioed a mile point at which the derail happened. Coming around the curve that fast on what looks like dusty rail, he probably had the breaks on the whole time you saw him in that video. A heavy unit like that takes a good stretch to slow down. rainy days a boom truck can slide for hundreds of yards.

All in all, I'd say Croatia's on track regulations and general track maintenance probably just blow ass...
