Oystein, if you are ignoring some solely based on avatars, I suggest you try out my FF extension:

You can ignore avatars, sigs, users, threads... you can even highlight users and threads that you wish to keep track of.
There's a lot of other features as well, but since you mentioned avatars, I just thought I'd point it out.
