Police are to serve and protect - if he was attempting suicide or was putting himself into a position to kill himself then they must attempt to stop him anyway. Any officer knows its a 50/50 chance that whatever force or conversation could either save a life to kill it.

The officer I think acted appropriately under the circumstances and holding him - the result sadly didn't save a life. Any officer is going to feel the pain of what happened, yet even more if he just allowed the guy to kill himself without trying. The cop did try, back up tried. Yet in a panic situation people do stupid things to either protect themselves or to harm others because they are unable to think straight.
