Lighting is that important!!

What Dave said (and he knows his shit).
I shoot with a Nikon D80 and got a 18-200 VR lens for it. It's a decent versatile lens that won't break the bank but gives good results.
Most importantly, I've learned to somewhat learn the camera and shoot everything on Manual so I can adjust and shoot exactly what I need.
Learn about exposure. Learn about white balance. Learn about lighting. Learn about framing and over all, learn how to pose models and deal with them.
I'm no photo pro by any means. I'm actually pretty novice BUT I make a damn good living with my basic skills, booked solid and never have to go looking for work, and that's all that matters. Just a little bit of knowledge and know-how will take you a looooong way.
With all that said, ANY CAMERA will do the job if you know how to use it.
