If you are desperate, a scuba tank and regulator will make a decent breathing assist. You have to suck on it to get it started, but the valve stays open until there's an overpressure, helping you to breathe.
also, oxygen can often be enough, don't always need respirator.
I've read that in 3rd world there's 3-5% death rate, but in US and other developed countries there have not been any deaths yet despite 62 cases. Due to better care.
