Case in point exactly. You have zero understanding of dogs thus the only animal suited to you as a pet is the independant cat that could care less if you live or die unless it's feeding time.
In the past I've had dogs as pets, the last one for nearly 18 years. When you leave on a trip you either take the dog with you, get a friend or family member to look after it, hire a dogsitter to come twice a day, or barring that... ever hear of a kennel?
You say needy, I say loving and friendly.
Always in your face/underfood? Try training the damn thing. Only true idiots get a dog and just expect it to know how to behave a certain way.
They smell? Even cats need a bath once in a while.
But you go ahead and enjoy your cats.
