In this economy and rediculous free porn environment, coupled with less and less new credit cards issued, retention is not nearly as easy as it used to be.

I can imagine high PPS becoming a thing of the past soon, except for short promotions. I think the 50/50 rev share will be as good as it gets soon, which is still a way better affiliate split than any mainstream product or service will offer you.
