The one thing I don't get is the moon lander itself. We don't have anything that can take off and land vertically like that even today, yet back then they seemed to be able to build one with no problem even without high speed computer controls or anything.
When those probes land on Mars like the rover, they just inflate a giant airbag around the capsule and bounce to a stop because building a lander that actually works is too hard, even today.

Give you additional hints besides that it was manned and much larger than the mars rovers. The moon lacks an atmosphere and has less gravity.
We also do have vehicles that take off and land vertically. Perhaps not exactly like that but again see gravity/atmosphere line. Back then they did have problems as well.
As for your bouncing ball on mars, they have used chutes as well as rockets to slow decent.
