SADDAM'S TOILET NOT BE SADDAM'S TOILET
CNN May Have Broadcast Images of Look-alike Toilet, Expert Says
A luxurious marble toilet in Saddam Hussein's Presidential Palace
broadcast numerous times on CNN today may not actually be Saddam's toilet
but may in fact be one of many dozens of look-alike toilets commissioned
by the paranoid Iraqi leader.
That is the opinion of Dr. David Thomerson, a professor at the University
of Minnesota who has devoted the last two decades to studying the
mysterious plumbing of the Iraqi strongman.
"By showing the marble toilet on TV, we may be attempting to send the
message that Saddam's regime is crumbling," Dr. Thomerson said today.
"But we have to be very careful about this, because we may have the wrong
toilet."
Because of the Iraqi dictator's paranoia, Dr. Thomerson said, Saddam
played "an elaborate shell-game" with his toilets, often moving from
toilet to toilet many times in one day and rarely using the same toilet
twice.
"He was trying to make it harder for his enemies to target one toilet,"
Dr. Thomerson said, adding that the task of authenticating Saddam's toilet
is made more difficult by the fact that there is little existing file
footage of toilets positively identified as Saddam's.
In other news from Baghdad, Iraqi Information Minister Muhammad Said
al-Sahhaf said today that an enormous statue of Saddam Hussein on
horseback in central Baghdad "just kind of fell down all of a sudden"
earlier today.
Mr. al-Sahhaf offered no explanation for the sudden toppling of the
statue, saying only that the incident may have been "wind-related."
