WASHINGTON - Vandals suspected of acting for religious reasons involving the coming of the new millennium have been defacing major Civil War monuments and memorials, the National Park Service reported Thursday.
The mysterious attacks, whose most recent targets included Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania, Antietam National Battlefield in Maryland and Manassas National Battlefield in Virginia, are similar to vandalism last year at a number of Civil War sites in the Mississippi Valley.
