you have notice to get out of the way of it. anywhere from 48-72 hours generally.
Ive been thru some small earthquakes when I lived in SF and they surprise the fuck out of you.
Ive been thru 2 hurricanes in the last 5 years. when a hurricane is coming you have time to leave or stock up.
