If it's really for you, do whatever you think is cool. I have two piercings in my left ear, a hoop in the bottom and a stud in the cartilage. Despite what Labret says, it doesn't make me look like any kind of pirate. I like it.
I also have very long hair, by the way. Dark brown in my case.
Edit: I also don't believe it's possible that something so superficial could cause people to feel so different baout you as to make you unhappy. If the people around you are that fierce, you're better off without them. Why should you allow them to bother you?
