Outside of some code to create invisible 1x1 gif images, I've not seen any native graphics manipulation for PHP.

Although there's no reason you couldn't write such code, I think stipulating libgd of imagemagik as a requirement is the only sane solution.

If you do write a bunch of native code, let me know I'd be intrested in seeing it.
