Reminds me (though this will emphasize my age) that I rented Alien and watched it for the first time while home alone. I have never been terribly affected by horror films, but I really reached the point with this one that I stopped the tape so I could watch the end the next morning when it was light outside.
I still think the monster in Alien is by far the scariest creature ever created for the movies. I also think that Alien is the scariest movie ever made.
As one critic explained, in the guise of a sci-fi movie, Alien is really a haunted house story set in the future.
