All year, I've been shooting videos with my digital camera of my various experiences including travels, hanging out, parties, etc. etc. I'm working on a documentary to show how diverse one's year can be from the beginning to the end. Last night, I played a show in Brooklyn with my old band (it was our last show) and on the way home, I took the Holland Tunnel. I filmed myself driving through the Holland Tunnel to add to my anthology of travels.
As SOON as I got through the tunnel, I was pulled over by a police car. At first, I didn't realize I was being pulled over because there are always cop cars in that area due to construction and dangerous traffic. So when I finally pulled over into a gas station, I noticed that there were not one, not two, not three... FIVE police cars surrounding my car and blocking off the exits. I had no idea why I was being pulled over. The police office comes up to my car and immediately screams "WHY WERE YOU FILMING IN THE HOLLAND TUNNEL!!?!?!?!" I told her that it was for my documentary and she says "YOU CAN'T FILM IN THE TUNNEL, IT'S TERRORIST TARGET!!!" They asked me all the questions about where I was coming from, where I was going. My arms were covered in green paint from the show, and the officer (still yelling and angry) asked "WHAT'S THE PAINT FOR!?!?!" I told her it was from the show that I just finished playing.
Not only did they take my license, registration, and insurance card, but I was forced to give my phone number and SSN and was informed that I am going to be added to a list of terrorist suspects... JUST BECAUSE I WANTED TO FILM MY TRAVELS. And America is the land of the free?
