Back when I started in adult, I was already working on web projects in mainstream, but adult was the industry that was leading web technologies and I was interested in learning all the various ins-n-outs, so I just started reading a lot, trying a bunch of things, going to various forums that were around at the time, and growing my skillsets.
My Brother and I partnered up back in 96/97 to develop a number of AVS sites and TGPs. From there it was just the fuel added to the learning fire. The money is a benefit, but it isn't the reason for being in it. You have to first enjoy what you do in order to be successful at it.
