I am trying to set something up, and I am failing miserably. Here's the deal:
This week, I switched from Comcast (boooooooooo comcast) to AT&T high speed dsl. With that signup, I got a free router/modem gateway. It is a 2Wire Gateway. That set up is back in my room, with the desktop connected to it.
My wireless connection works, so no problem there.
That leaves me with a now-unused wireless router. I got it when I had vonage, and after that, I just used it for the wireless when I had Comcast. It is a Linksys wrtp54g v1.
What I want to do is hook the Linksys up to my DirecTV hd dvr box. That will allow me to access VOD, schedule online, etc.
If I have understood my reading correctly, I need the Linksys to act as a switch instead of a router.
I have followed all the instructions on
this page about 10 times now. The only thing I have not done is to change the IP on the Linksys. I have not done that becasue
a) When I am on the desktop, and do an ipconfig/all, it shows that the 2Wire has a different IP than the Linksys shows when it it hooked into my laptop.
b) When I try following their instructions and do change the IP first, I then lose the ability to access the Linksys router's web access page. It does the equivalent of a 404.
When I hook the Linksys router up to the dvr, it goes through and checks the ip, gateway, subnet mask, and dns. It (the process) gives me check marks for all those things. I have them set to match what is on the 2Wire router, with the exception of the IP. That I have set to the Linksys router's info. But when it tries to connect to the internet, it fails.
Does anyone see anything obvious that I am doing wrong? I got sucked into trying to figure it out last night, and lost about 4 hours of my life. Today I have resisted the urge to mess with it so far, but it is a siren song trying to lure me in and smash me against the rocks of my own ineptness.
