Officials charge 6 teens in beating

RAINTREE -- Parents and local officials are trying to comprehend what motivated a group of high school students to turn on an unconscious 13-year-old girl, beat her, and urinate on her last week after an outdoor drinking party.
Criminal charges have been brought against six teens in connection with the beating that left the 13-year-old covered with vomit and mud and shaking uncontrollably. Most of the suspects, two of whom are minors, grew up in the same East Braintree neighborhood. Some have not only been charged with abusing the girl, but also with attacking two other teens who tried to protect her.
Residents criticized the 13-year-old for joining the drinking party -- her blood alcohol was three times the legal limit -- but were dismayed by the behavior of the other teens.
Peter Kurzberg, Braintree school superintendent, said, ''I have no idea what would have motivated students and young adults to act in that manner. It's very disturbing.''
