U.S. Prisoner of War Rescued in Iraq
Tue April 1, 2003 07:32 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An American prisoner of war has been rescued in Iraq, a U.S. official said on Tuesday.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed media reports of a prisoner rescue but gave no further details.
CNN said in an unconfirmed report that the prisoner had been rescued from Nassiriya, where five members of the U.S. 507th Maintenance Company went missing and were later shown on Iraqi state television on March 23.
When asked about reports of a prisoner recovery in Iraq, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld referred questions to the U.S. Central Command in Qatar.
Central Command scheduled an extraordinary middle-of-the-night briefing, and Rumsfeld said the planned Centcom announcement would be good news.
"I'd stay tuned to Centcom," Rumsfeld said.
