You are absolutely right. People should have the right to nuclear weapons.
300 years ago, the constitution said that people had the right to weapons because the government was new. Nobody knew if it was going to get taken over by the British who would oppress the people. And guns only fired a single shot. Everybody was in the army and fighting for the new nation.
There are way too many gun nuts out there. Criminals have to live, so they are going to commit crimes regardless. And they are always going to get guns easily regardless of the laws that are passed by Congress.
The people are not organized enough to revolt against the government. It has been shitting on us for years, and this isn't going to change. If the government were to really get corrupt, the armed forces would either be used to oppress us, or they would mutiny against the government, depending on whether or not Obama gives them a pay raise, and they have most of the big guns.
Law abiding citizens with guns increase the crime rates. Now thieves have to carry guns in case the old lady they rob is carrying a gun. And if a thief carries out a home invasion and knows that the residents are likely armed, he's probably not going to take chances and shoot them. Now a robbery becomes murder. The number one deterrent to robbery is a dog. It's a proven fact. Homes without dogs get robbed 10x more often than homes without dogs.
Plus, many criminals get guns by stealing them from law abiding citizens with guns. And many law abiding citizens with guns can become criminals for the first time and shoot up their families without warning. Not to mention many accidents are possible with irresponsible gun owners.
Really, what the hell do you need with an assault rifle?
