Mate they just gave you the wrong info.
NAB is as follows (i have been doing it 4 yrs)
5 cheques / OBP (whatever that stands for) = $10
Under $AU2k if you have a decent history they should clear it within 3 days. Over $2k requires Authorisation from overseas department and they will probably put it on term deposit 30-60 days.
Cheques take 4 weeks to clear so not much you can do about it.. but ive found NAB to be far and away the best
