I've thought about certifications every time work was slow, but in the end I always decided it was a waste of time and money. Many feel certifications are for people without actual skills.
My suggestion:
take a lower job and work your way up learning actual on the job skills rather than how to master a certification course. I think you'll get to the high paying job faster this way.
I also think working with hobby type projects are always great resume builders. Example, if you go submit some neat little module to an open source project it's a great conversation starter. Esepcially when you find out your future boss has used the application you worked on.
