What exactly is Bit Torrent?
Bit Torrent is the first major program in what may become a new generation of file sharing programs. It has also been described as a "file swarming" program. It's main strength is it makes the newest releases available to more people faster than most conventional downloading methods. With most conventional servers (FTPs, HTTP servers, IRC bots, etc.) tons of people all try to connect to a couple servers when it first comes out. The result is only a fraction of people getting the file in the beginning and/or really slow speeds.
What Bit Torrent does is it actually shares the file you are downloading while you are downloading it. So the more people that are downloading a file, the more people are sharing the file as well. After you start bit torrent it will download a couple chunks of the file, and then begin looking for people who still need those chunks you have. It then uploads those chunks to those who need it while it downloads more pieces you don't have.
