I think you'd do better with a higher-contrast, busier foreground image. Large same-color areas like the street in one of your pics let the image beneath show through, and I'd guess your swirl was little dim (lower contrast) to begin with.

Actually, I got the swirl by using the liquify filter on the goatse.cx ass pic
The low-contrast look is a result of one of the checkerboards. The method I use leaves one of the checkerboards in "normal" blend mode.
