there are huge tax benefits to it in the US.
and yeh, we are shameless - the schools name buildings for them - and that strokes their egos.
the microsoft clan 'owns' a bunch of the buildings on UW campus =) Mary Gates hall (mother gates), William H Gates Law School (daddy gates - he is also a regent - kind of like a board of director for the school), there is Paul Allen Library, okay drawing a blank on the rest of them...
