Now, as to what you were talking about accidents can and do sometimes happen when stupid people carry or use firearms. If you own a gun then it is your absolute duty to be 100% that when you shoot, your shooting at a bonified target such as an intruder. That is why the line of sight rule exists. Like I said, in her situation I would have shot through that door. The law would have looked badly upon me for doing it with no l.o.s., but in certian situations even cops are smart enough to see the big picture. Who the hell is going to open their door to make sure their not shooting someone they know when their pretty sure its not?
Also, you make a good point about family fights, etc....... here's the deal with that: it all comes down to education. Some people should have zero access to guns. Their should be strict mental testing to determine if someone should even own one, but lets visit reality. There is no test. So if you have a firearm in your house you must educate your family and your friends to insure that accidents are less likely to happen. It might sound weird, but in my house the word is "MARLEY" as in Bob. All my friends know, my x wife and my current girl know the word. If you must gain access to my house through some strange twist of events that forces you to basicly break in or any other number of reasons, just scream "MARLEY" and that way I know its someone I shouldn't shoot.
Never mix guns with alcohol, dont even think about them if your pissed off, and never leave them laying around, loaded or not. I own many. I have one loaded constantly and its always on my person, in house or not. I do not look forward to using it, I have never been in a situation where I had to pull it, and I dont want to be, ever.

A little responsibility and thinking ahead of time can be the difference between killing your friend or staying up late listining to him bitch about his girl kicking him out again.
Fact is there will always be tons of people who aren't educated in using guns and therefore there will always be more accidents with guns than those guns actually being used for self protection in your house and therefore more guns = more danger for everyone. I'm happy i don't live where you live. No matter what the next big ass reply of yours is: 100 people with guns are for self protection is way more likely to go wrong than 100 people without guns for self protection.
