While serial killers and such are common on TV, in real life they are *extremely* uncommon.

In your case, chances of it being a random drunk person, teens vandalizing stuff, a drunk friend or a typical burglar were all far more likely than it being someone with any intention of hurting you.

So even if you decide to get a gun, you should still call the police and hide in the closet. It's less dangerous both to yourself and to others.
