well said, lm. the only thing i would consider about the natural adaptation is, what would make it replicate the same thing? it seems the cold virus adapts to something new, where thus far there are only 2 strands of this virus. not saying you are wrong by any means, just opening it as a possibility. here's a quote that might make things look a *little* brighter from msnbc:
Quote:
A senior WHO official said Wednesday that scientists are researching why approximately 80 percent to 90 percent of patients begin to recover after a few days but a small minority of patients quickly becomes critical.
?We are trying to understand why some patients rapidly deteriorate to a more severe form ? about 10 percent to 15 percent ? and why some progress to a less severe form and then get better,? said Mark Salter, WHO coordinator for clinical management and etiology.

in that respect, it appears that right now fatality is only at 10-15% (stated elsewhere in the article). for a frightening epidemic-like virus, that's not what people want to hear, but 90% is still a pretty good survival rate. better than the tailgunner of the B-17.
also some of what's stated on their R&D:
Quote:
?We are a bit puzzled because we are not only dealing apparently with one pathogen but with two. The reason why we believe that both pathogens should be given equal attention is that there is consistent finding of both pathogens in individual patients or of either of the pathogens in other patients,? he said. ?What we are seeing actually are three hypotheses.?
SARS might be caused by one of those two viruses or ?these two pathogens have to come together to cause this very severe outbreak,? said Stohr.
The latter theory is that the coronavirus ? which Stohr said lives in immune cells that fight off disease ? destroys or weakens the immunity in the patient. The second virus then ?has practically an open door to go in and to sicken the patient beyond what this virus would be able to do normally. But more research is being done to verify that.?

but, it does kinda sound like these two travel in packs, so who knows.
at any rate, gives everyone something to consider.
