the "towels" and turbans actually follow some sort of bizarre Arab fashion, although I haven't ever entirely figured out how it works. But I know they have fashions that come and go like anything else... if checkered towels were in 10 years ago, you wouldn't catch them dead wearing them now.

Actually, they're very strict.. There are some extremeists who won't allow women in public unaccompanied by either their husband or a male family member. Women who make eye contact or have a conversation with a man who is not their husband or a male family member can actually be publically stoned to death. They must walk I believe 5 feet behind men at all times, eyes downcast.
